The Beautiful Hilltop. The almost black cypress trees near the top of the hill are in constant motion against a deep blue sky. There are grey and white clouds which are changing shape as they climb higher into the unknown space above. The hilltop itself contains layers of sweeping, brilliant spring colours which create a carefree, happy ambience. You can hear Puccini's opera being sung in the distance. This is a view of the medieval town of Lucca - it is two pm (Siesta Time) in August. You can feel the sun’s hot rays beating down on this ancient, narrow lane with its weather-beaten stones. Only the colourful array of flowers is protected by a narrow strip of shadow. All the shopkeepers are inside their tall ceilinged homes above their stores. Though all attached, each abode has its own bright colour- reddish hues, yellows, pinks, violets and even sand but all the dwellings have uniform bright blue window trimmings and shutters. You can touch the peace and the tranquility of siesta in this wonderful walled city in Tuscany. A Tuscan fortress hill town. You feel the centuries of long ago as your eye is drawn inward and up the narrow stone path towards the palest yellow of the church. Ahead the thickness and unrelenting height of the ancient stone walls create a feeling of respect and awe. The subtle greys, charcoals, blues and greens in these walls create a sensation of depth. Hanging pots of red and white geraniums provide a vivid contrast in this painting. Tuscany is ablaze with colour in springtime with blood red wild poppies, and a variety of brilliant yellow orchids, buttercups and forsythia. The ancient villas are hidden by a veil of cypresses reaching towards the heavenly sunlit sky. October in Cortina shows its vivid reds, rusts, and golden greens simultaneously. As the leaves adjust their colours almost daily, they shower the old stone steps in a beautiful carpet with an uplifting array of hues. The old stone castle looks protected and mysterious in its autumn finery.
