Behind an ornate Tuscan gate we see this extensive soft green lawn and we are led up the long gravel path to an imposing golden villa in the Tuscan style. The tiled roof is nestled in mature trees and one can see the typical ancient formal garden in the distance with familiar fuchsia and scarlet roses planted in an orderly way. The mild blue sky creates an ambience of relaxation and peace. Feelings of curiosity are also stirred about the same family who has lived here over the centuries. Venice is under siege in June with both increasing humidity and throngs of tourists. This composition is of a charming, peaceful back canal where only dramatic vertical ancient dwellings and small gondolas or personal brightly painted boats prevail. Everything is reflected in the translucent calm water below. The gold, russet and blue-green hues mingle gently in these reflections and one can hear opera being sung in the distance. Castle with Shadows. An ancient castle in Tuscany at dusk when the long shadows of the stand of cypress trees appear darker and longer than the trees themselves. The stark blue sky and the bright green lawn in the foreground of the painting only reinforce the effect. The ambience created is one of mystery and the desire to discover more A small corner of a formal Italian garden belonging to an estate in Lake Como celebrates the perfection of the Italian gardener. Everything is in a state of groomed bliss with a classically designed vase in the centre. The flowers are of harmonious colours and one can picture the lengthy garden as a whole as the patterns are congruent. Peace is abundant in this relaxing space. It is August along the Amalfi drive and this is a typical scene with a plethora of fuchsia bougainvillaea and their leaves in stunning varieties of unusual greens lit by the intense sun. In the distance we view the tranquil blue water and sky which blend easily into one at the horizon. In the mid-ground there is some southern Italian architecture, possibly places of worship or even extravagant villas with their domed roofs. A colourful and harmonious ambience prevails. A close-up view of vivid purple and mauve wisteria and their fascinating grey stems, which wind in every conceivable fashion around an old fashioned wooden mailbox which has been weathered by the elements. We see the house is in the old Tudor Style prevalent in England with dark brown wood on a white wall. The effect of light and shadow create an ambience of joy as the sun appears to make the blossoms sparkle. Layers of colour sweep across a barren Italian field at an unusual angle, which quickly carries ones eyes up to a dramatic thick dark forest in the background. Part of the red burnt sienna field is painted in a deep pure black to suggest the aftermath of burning. This same darkness is also visible in the somewhat intense forest as well an array of deep blues, greens, and umber hues. A sprinkling of scarlet poppies in the foreground and hints of same in the dense forest create an air of mystery and a curiosity to investigate further.
